As a final-year student in human resources (HR) at Arteveldehogeschool in Ghent, Iris is in the middle of an exciting work placement at Familiehulp in Ghent.
For four months, she will gain valuable experience in HR administration within Familiehulp. Below, Iris shares her personal journey and the valuable insights she has gained so far during her time at Familiehulp
Iris, begins her story with a smile on her face:
"I came to Familiehulp in my search for a work placement, partly because of my supervisor's recommendations. I was immediately drawn to the warm atmosphere and closeness of the organisation. Moreover, I also knew some carers from Familiehulp who visited my grandfather, which made it feel familiar.
The offices are also ideally located and accessible by public transport, which made the choice even easier."
Driven by her interest in HR administration, Iris was curious about the challenges ahead.
"During my interview, I met my team leader, who immediately showed an interest in my work placement requirements. It really feels like they are collaborating with me on how best to use my time at Familiehulp, which is a sign that I am in the right place."
In her role as a trainee in HR administration, no two days are the same for Iris.
"My duties include scheduling medical examinations and supporting case managers with a wide range of administrative tasks, covering the process from the start to end of a contract. This experience has significantly improved my knowledge and skills in HR administration.
I am also learning to communicate effectively, including in other languages, and to deal with complex issues such as workplace accidents. My analytical skills are also being improved due to my involvement in a project about onboarding new employees into our new digital systems.
I felt welcomed and appreciated from day one.
II felt welcomed and appreciated from day one, which helped my learning process tremendously."
Iris believes her work placement at Familiehulp is not only a professional development opportunity, but will also allow her to develop on a personal level.
"I have learnt many new things and grown as a person. The experience has boosted my self-confidence and given me a better understanding of how everything works in practice.
If I want to work in HR in the future, I know I have laid a strong foundation.
I would definitely recommend a work placement with Familiehulp to others! Familiehulp is a welcoming organisation with a varied range of tasks. It's a great place to develop new skills and gain valuable experience."
Her advice to others interested in a work placement with Familiehulp is simple but powerful:
"Always be open about your expectations and just be yourself. That way, you can easily meet new people and get the most out of your work placement experience."
Thanks in part to her work placement at Familiehulp, Iris is looking to the future with confidence and is ready to apply her knowledge and the experience gained in her future career. We wish her every success.
My work placement is challenging, but thanks to my mentor and the team, I can overcome obstacles and achieve my goals.
